Kodama Gallery opened in Osaka in 1998. Contrary to the heavily Tokyo oriented Japanese contemporary art scene, Kodama Gallery had focused on Kyoto Osaka based artists. Kodama Gallery was adn is responsible to boost recent popularity of Kansai-based artists.
Tokyo branch opened in 2004, then moved and upsized in 2008, shifting the orientation toward wider range of the artists. It was the same year that the main gallery in Osaka moved to Kyoto. Kyoto space has two exhibition spaces, 400sq meters each, making Kodama Gallery possible to hold the largest gallery space in Japan. The annual amount of exhibitions at Kodama Galleries sums 25 to 30 shows in the 3 spaces.
